Slough Rotary building communities, bridging continents |
|
Slough Rotary club was visited on Thursday by District Governor Laurie Cunningham. He introduced a new theme, ‘Building Communities and Bridging Continents’ relevant for both today’s and future rotarians in building a club programme. It also served as a straightforward message to help those unfamiliar with Rotary understand what it is all about.
Peter White, President of the Slough club for 2010/11, embraced the theme by reporting the club had just purchased 10,000 crocus bulbs. These would brighten up a Slough roundabout whilst promoting Rotary’s international work in eradicating Polio. He also introduced the recipient of this year’s Slough’s Young Citizen Award, Brntha Manoharan, sponsored by the club, who later spoke to the members about her work.
Laurie also encouraged the club to look at new ways of involving young people, through an Interact Club, for those of 12-18 years of age and Rotaract, for those between the ages of 18 and 30. With Community Activities being an important part of many a school curriculum who better than Rotarians, because of their close touch with the community and community projects, to help students and schools achieve their aims.
